Local Karate Students Ready to Compete Globally
This summer, two dedicated young athletes from Moscow, Idaho, have secured a significant milestone in their martial arts journey as they prepare to represent the United States at the 14th World Union of Karate-Do Federations (WUKF) World Championships in Romania. Hayden Schwartz, a 20-year-old, and George DeLeon, a 13-year-old Colfax Junior High student, have both been training intensely at the Northwest Wado-ryu Karate dojo under the guidance of head instructor Chris Schwartz.
A Reflection of Dedication and Discipline
Chris Schwartz, not only a mentor to the boys but also a parent, expressed immense pride in their achievements, stating, "These two guys were not built in a day or a week or a month or a year, or even a couple of years. They have dedicated years to attain this level." The discipline instilled through years of training is evident as DeLeon, who began his martial arts journey at the tender age of seven, shares his passion for karate, having recently achieved his black belt in August 2025.
Both Hayden and George have diverse experiences in competitions, with George citing his attendance at several tournaments across the Pacific Northwest over the last two years. Their upcoming international competition not only serves as a personal milestone but also represents an opportunity to inspire their karate community. Hayden explained, "This is a big milestone and a goal I've been working toward for many years.”
A Family and Community Bond Beyond the Dojo
According to Chris, the dojo provides more than just martial arts training; it serves as a family and community for those involved. "For nearly a decade, our dojo has been a place where people of all ages transform through the power of Wado-ryu karate," he explained. Both athletes emphasized the importance of presenting themselves positively during the tournament, with George stating, "I hope to perform at my best, even despite the stress."
Fundraising for an International Experience
In preparation for their trip, the young martial artists have set up GoFundMe campaigns to help cover their expenses while competing abroad. They recognize the financial challenges of attending such prestigious events, especially as young athletes representing their country. Through their hard work and the support of their local community, they aim to gather the necessary funds for this remarkable opportunity.
Impact on the Local Karate Community
The excitement surrounding their selection is palpable among fellow students and parents at the dojo. Moran, a parent of another student, expressed admiration for George and Hayden’s determination, noting, "It's inspiring for all of us here; it shows what can be achieved with hard work and dedication. They serve as role models for younger kids in our dojo, proving that with commitment, anything is possible."
What Lies Ahead: A Journey of Discovery
Both Hayden and George eagerly anticipate their first-ever international experience. For George, this will mark his first trip outside the country, while Hayden expresses enthusiasm for competing on such a large scale. Their collective achievements highlight the potential of young athletes and the importance of community support in helping them reach their dreams.
This remarkable story of dedication and aspiration reminds us all of the profound impact martial arts can have on personal growth, community engagement, and international camaraderie. As the two prepare to board their flight, they carry with them not only their skills but also the hopes and support of their hometown.
Encouragingly, residents and martial arts enthusiasts can rally behind these athletes, whether through donations, words of encouragement, or attending local martial arts exhibitions and classes. By doing so, they contribute to a culture of support that nurtures young talents in their pursuit of excellence.
