The Journey to the Pan American Stage
Three talented athletes from the Saanich-based Varsity Performance Karate are preparing to leave their mark at the upcoming Junior Pan American Games and Karate Championships in Asunción, Paraguay. Ella Crowle, Yashita Kaku, and Joann Huang are not just representing themselves; they embody the hopes and aspirations of countless young martial artists across Canada. Their participation in these high-stakes competitions reflects years of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence.
Spotlight on Talents
Ella will be competing in the U21 Women’s Kumite -68kg division at the Junior Pan American Games from August 20-23. As a seasoned competitor, her accolades, including a gold medal at the Canada Winter Games and multiple honors at national and provincial events, position her as a strong contender. "This feels like a big step forward in my journey," she remarked, an attitude shared amongst her peers.
Yashita and Joann, meanwhile, will shine at the Junior Pan American Karate Championships from August 25-31. Yashita will fight in the 14/15 Kumite -47kg division, while Joann will compete in the U14 Kumite +52kg division, both of them demonstrating the profound impact of dedicated training and unwavering support from their community. Yashita’s recent silver medal at the 2025 nationals further solidifies her readiness, while Joann, the 2025 Canadian national champion, brings an impressive track record.
Coaching Excellence and Community Support
The trio will be coached by Kraig Devlin, a former national team athlete and high-performance director for Karate Canada. Devlin emphasized the importance of their training environment: "The success they are achieving is due not only to their personal dedication but also to the incredible training environment created by our local group of committed athletes." This local support network is vital for nurturing young talent and fostering a community of martial artists.
