Central Alberta Shines at ISKF National Karate Tournament
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, athletes from Central Alberta proved their mettle at the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) National Karate Tournament held in Quebec City from May 15-18. With 24 medals earned across various divisions, these local competitors showcased not only their physical abilities but also the dedication and support from their coaches and communities.
Strong Performances Win Medals
Representatives from three dojos in Red Deer—the Shotokan Karate Club of Red Deer, Sakura Karate Do Club, and Nippon Karate Dojo—competed fiercely in both kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) events. Emma Gutierrez led the Black Belt division with three silver medals and one bronze, while her peers Fiona Nelson and Sofia Reyes also made strides by earning multiple bronze and silver medals. Blake Corotan secured triple gold in the Brown Belt division, bringing home one of the most impressive performances of the tournament.
The Spirit of Karate
The importance of community and mentorship was highlighted in a media release celebrating the athletes' accomplishments. "These impressive results reflect the individual effort of each student and the strong guidance from their coaches," it stated. Coaches Geovanni Gutierrez, Rahul Channan, and Jonard Corotan received special recognition for their commitment to fostering young martial artists in the region.
