Edgar Kolyan's ascent to prominence in the world of Kudo serves as an inspiring testament to the power of passion and hard work. Born in Artashat, Armenia, Kolyan began his martial arts journey at the tender age of six with karate classes. This early start in a rich cultural backdrop fostered his dedication to the sport, shaping his path well before he became a renowned international champion.
Transitioning Across Borders: From Armenia to Russia
At the age of 12, Kolyan and his family migrated to Ivanovo, Russia. The transition was pivotal as he not only continued practicing karate but also embraced army hand-to-hand combat. The diversity in training introduced him to new techniques and styles that would later enhance his skills in Kudo.
"The difference in fighting styles was immense; from karate's structured techniques to the unrestricted grappling of hand-to-hand combat, I found a new level of engagement in the sport that prepared me for Kudo," Kolyan reflects.
The Spark of Kudo Competition
Kolyan’s first serious encounter with Kudo competition came at the Golden Ring of Russia Cup, where he showcased remarkable determination and skill, reaching the finals despite being up against more seasoned opponents. This tournament marked the inception of his professional Kudo career.
"It was a tough match that left a lasting impression on me. Losing to a skilled opponent also made me more determined to improve and succeed in future competitions," he states, highlighting how early challenges fueled his drive.
Significant Milestones: A World Champion Emerges
Today, Kolyan stands as a two-time world champion and two-time World Cup winner. Yet, he treasures his first world championship in 2005 the most. At just 19 years old, he became the youngest-ever champion in Kudo's history, a record he still holds. Kolyan's journey was fraught with obstacles requiring relentless training and sacrifice, often training two to three times daily to overcome fierce competition.
"Becoming a world champion filled me with immense pride, especially considering I had to fight through the best in Russia to even qualify," Kolyan reflects, emphasizing the importance of determination and perseverance.

No champion rises alone, and Kolyan credits much of his success to his mentors. Throughout his journey, he has been fortunate to train under exceptional coaches, each contributing pivotal insights and strategies that shaped his career.
"At different stages, my coaches enriched my experience and helped refine my skills in Kudo. Their guidance was instrumental during pivotal moments of my career," he explains, expressing gratitude for the support that bolstered his trajectory.
