Karateka from Lisbon Embrace Renshusei Training in Oita City
A dedicated team of eight karate practitioners from Lisbon, Portugal, recently embarked on an enriching journey to Oita City, Japan, to participate in an intensive Renshusei training program. Organized by Paulo Sternberg Sensei, the training took place at the historic remains of Funai Castle, providing a culturally rich backdrop for both formal and informal practice. The group, comprising senseis and dedicated karateka, included Teotónio Alves, Manuel Fernandes, João Hala, Paulo Rocha, Filipe Alves, Bruno Gaspar, and Bruno Batalha.
The Structure of Training
The Renshusei training spanned two days, featuring a structured program that included two hours of training on the first day, followed by four hours on the next, divided into two sessions. Central to the training were themes such as ‘Kihon within the Kihon’ and ‘Maai in Budo Karate’, which emphasized the intricacies of techniques ranging from 五本組手 (Gohon Kumite) to 自由組手 (Jiyu Kumite). The training also involved a focus on kata such as 平安 (Heian), 半月 (Hangetsu), and 壯鎭 (Sochin), accompanied by discussions on their applications (OYO).
Beyond the Dojo: Building Connections
A unique aspect of this experience was the social connections forged outside formal practices. The evening of their arrival and after the training sessions, the group generously invited André Bertel Sensei to dinner. This social interaction allowed for informal discussions, technical questions, and even spontaneous karate practice. Such exchanges fostered a sense of camaraderie and knowledge-sharing vital in the martial arts community.
Key Insights in Budo Karate
The training emphasized the importance of ground power and optimal hip usage through the practice of 立ち方 (Tachikata). Understanding these foundational elements is crucial for karateka aiming to enhance their skills and effectiveness in practice. The connections made during this training experience highlight how martial arts extend beyond physical forms; they encapsulate respect, tradition, and the sharing of knowledge across cultures.
Reflections and Future Outlook
As the Portuguese karateka concluded their training, there were many reflections on the immense value of such immersive experiences. Training in Japan not only improves technique but deepens appreciation for the cultural roots of karate. The participants expressed their gratitude for the focus and heart exhibited by all during training. The encounters shared over meals and practices add a layer of personal connection that transcends the dojo experience.
